Total retail sales in Taiwan rose 3.6% y-o-y to nearly NT$ 1,120 billion in Q4 2017, due mainly to the strong sales growth of 5.4% y-o-y registered by the general merchandise sector.
International visitor arrivals to Taiwan surged by 10.1% y-o-y in Q4 2107, contributing to annual visitor arrivals of 10.7 million.
Retail rents in Taipei rose by one basis point q-o-q in Q4 2017 after declining for three consecutive quarters. While some retailers were seen to resume expansion plans, they remained cost conscious.
Sportswear retailers remained active, supported by growing consumer interest in health and wellness. Selected retailers in the cosmetics and personal care sector were observed to be seeking premises to open new outlets focused on providing a high level of customer service.
