This ViewPoint compares state and local taxes paid by households in the Washington, D.C. region in light of the 2019 federal tax season and the limits on SALT deductions.
•We analyzed taxes on a sample household of $200,000 joint annual income.
•We considered income, sales and property taxes for a $700,000 assessed home and $20,000 assessed automobile.
•Households would pay similar portions of their gross income in D.C. (11.7%) and Virginia (11.6%). Maryland households pay the highest share (14.2%).
•In all jurisdictions, SALT taxes for this sample household far exceeded the $10,000 limit on federal SALT deductions by an order of almost two times.
