November 9, 2015 – CBRE Group, Inc. and King & Spalding teamed up
for the third consecutive year to host a technology-focused panel in
partnership with Venture
Atlanta. CBRE’s Tech
& Media Practice Atlanta Leader, Christian
Devlin, co-hosted and co-moderated the panel with
acclaimed Silicon Valley technology attorney at King & Spalding, Judy O’Brien.
The panel, titled “How to Attract and Work with
Strategic Investors” included a venture capitalist from San Francisco, a
corporate venture capitalist from Atlanta, an Atlanta-based venture capitalist
and company operator and two CEOs of Atlanta-based technology companies.
“This type of event provides a very unique opportunity
for Atlanta based tech companies to network with out-of-town and Atlanta-based investors,
and to learn about the pros and cons of working with strategic/corporate
investors in comparison to traditional venture capitalists,” Devlin said.
included UPS’ Rimas Kapeskas; Jackson Square Ventures’ Josh Breinlinger; Canal
Partners’ Wain Kellum; Ally Commerce’s Jason Rubottom; and DoubleNet Pay’s
Brian Cosgray. Key takeaways from the event included:
The best kind of strategic partnership is one that
changes what the company is.
Companies are four times more likely to achieve an
exit if they have a strategic investor.
Corporate strategic investors are increasingly
coming in earlier with start-ups.
Transparency and a clear understanding of an
investor’s goals is even more important with a strategic investor than with a
traditional venture capitalist.
If an entrepreneur takes on a strategic or corporate
investor, it may be beneficial to take at least two.
