National Best Practices, Local Knowledge

State and local entities and higher learning institutions have unique requirements when it comes to managing real estate interests. At CBRE, we pair an unmatched understanding of public procurement requirements with world-class brokerage and advisory services through our dedicated Public Institutions and Education Solutions (PIES) business group. Our network of public sector specialists across the country partners with local brokerage teams to bring our clients the critical combination of national best practice and local knowledge necessary to execute your transactions. Our public sector and university clients benefit from our experience advising over 100 non-federal agencies and universities on some of their most complicated and high profile projects.

Areas of Expertise

With deep expertise in portfolio inventory, optimization, strategic planning, development advisory, and brokerage, the PIES team advises state, county, and municipal agencies nationwide to achieve their goals through real estate. Our public sector experience goes far beyond typical office and industrial transactions. We are selling ports, redeveloping convention and civic centers, identifying affordable housing opportunities, selling municipal parking lots and garages, and leading public private partnerships across the country to revitalize downtowns and improve public portfolio management nationwide.

Today, the PIES team is providing comprehensive real estate services to over 60 public entities across the United States including but not limited to the cities of Oakland, CA, Miami, FL, Ann Arbor, MI, Mobile, AL and Dallas and Austin, TX. Our state clients include New York, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, California, and Washington.

CBRE clients receive nationally tested advice to answer some of the most pressing challenges facing public sector real estate today:

  • Our population is growing and requires additional services. How can real estate help us meet our citizens’ needs most efficiently?
  • Our inventory records are stored in multiple places and I’m not sure exactly what my agency owns.
  • We know that our public buildings have significant deferred maintenance issues but it’s hard to know the full scope of the problem and how to prioritize renovations.
  • The City owns multiple downtown sites that are not currently performing at their highest and best use, but we aren’t sure how to proceed. Could a PPP help us achieve our goals?
  • How can we track and improve the performance of our owned assets as compared to their ongoing costs?

We hear these concerns from clients routinely and have provided demonstrable results and savings through strategic advisory and brokerage solutions. By engaging with the PIES team, our clients have access to CBRE’s seven business lines and 14 industry and specialty practices ranging from Hotels, to Facility Assessments, to Marinas, and more.
