Michael Shields joined CBRE in 2008 as a Senior Vice President. In this position, Mr. Shields represents institutional owners in leasing retail and mixed use properties, and also represents retailers in formulating and executing their national and regional expansion programs. Mr. Shields also provides such services on behalf of select financial institutions and provides third party consulting services to retail and institutional clients.Prior to joining CBRE, Mr. Shields worked as a Managing Principal for Northern Realty Group, a commercial retail services firm which he co-founded in 1987. From 1981 through 1986, Mr. Shields served as Vice President in the Retail Properties Group of the Chicago office of Rubloff, Inc., where he represented ownership in leasing the retail components of mixed-use and office developments in downtown Chicago.
Notable assignments include AT&T Corporate Center, 600 N. Michigan Ave, the Leo Burnett Building, and a series of buildings owned by the Federal Government in the historic State Street corridor.
Mr. Shields has represented such diverse retailers as Viacom, J. Crew, Carson Pirie Scott & Co., Planet Hollywood and the country’s largest seller of luxury automobiles, Luxury Motors.In the financial sector, he has worked as the exclusive Chicago real estate representative for Harris Bank (a subsidiary of the Bank of Montreal), American Express on a national roll-out of a new service line, and Chicago-based Metropolitan Bank Group Group, which he represented in the acquisition of a portfolio of existing bank branches, while also identifying and negotiating other urban opportunities on the bank’s behalf. Mr. Shields represents such institutional owners as Principal Financial and Phoenix based Cole Capital in the leasing of their urban retail assets, and has overseen site acquisition on behalf of Guggenheim Capital.
On a consulting basis, Mr. Shields represented FedEx in retail-related matters for the eastern region of the United States and has worked in a similar capacity for Archibald Candy Corporation, the parent company of Fannie May and Fanny Farmer Candy stores. Mr. Shields also successfully negotiated the termination of 75 Early Learning Centre leases in regional malls throughout the country on behalf of John Menzies, plc., the Edinburgh, Scotland-based parent company. In Chicago, he has provided real estate services to the Lyric Opera and Steppenwolf Theatre.
