Chris Smiles joined CBRE Capital Markets team in early 2017 as Senior Vice President, Multifamily. In partnership with Still Hunter III, Chris leads the firm’s South Florida multifamily investment sales team, with a focus on serving CBRE’s institutional clients.
Chris has over 30 years of real estate experience, centering primarily on the multifamily investment and management business. Prior to joining CBRE, Chris served as President of Multifamily for Woolbright Development, where he spearheaded the development of the firm’s new multifamily investment platform. Before being tapped by Woolbright, Chris spent three years as a Managing Director at Waypoint Residential, where he managed all multifamily acquisitions for the state of Florida and oversaw the purchase of more than 1,500 units in total.
Prior to joining Waypoint, Chris spent 23 years as a Vice President at Gables Residential—formerly Trammell Crow Residential, where he achieved partner status in 1992 in recognition of significant revenue contributions. At Gables, Chris was responsible for new business development and investment, specializing in receiverships, acquisitions, dispositions, and property management. Acting as principal real estate broker for the state of Florida, Chris exclusively listed and sold 32 multifamily projects totaling more than $1 billion in consideration. Chris also worked closely with the firm’s institutional clients to procure property management assignments for more than 40,000 multifamily units, and to direct the acquisition, joint venture, and value-added renovation of over $300 million worth of property. Chris has worked on several receiverships over the course of his career, including his appointment by the Supreme Court of Delaware as receiver of a six-property, multi-state apartment portfolio.
Before joining Trammell Crow Residential Services in 1989, Chris was national director of marketing for Balcor Property Management, a unit of Shearson / Lehman American Express that owned and managed more than 60,000 apartment units. From 1983 to 1985, Chris analyzed real estate acquisitions and provided workout services for the South Florida arm of Trans-Arabian Investment Bank (TAIB), Bahrain.
Chris is a licensed real estate broker and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He is an active participant in several industry organizations, including the National Multifamily Housing Council and the Urban Land Institute.
